about the book
Some sixteen years after we first meet him, Will Treaty has gone from a young boy with dreams of becoming a knight to being the Ranger Halt’s apprentice to now, finally, being the most famous adult Ranger in the land. Perhaps his most trying task, however, is yet ahead of him.
Like it or not, Will is getting older. He is facing a major battle, and he is practically alone in the fight. It is time for him to take the place of Halt and become the master of a new Ranger’s Apprentice, but he never expected that he would be the first Ranger to train a female Apprentice.
That apprentice is fifteen-year-old Maddie, a girl of royalty, accustomed to a life of privilege about whom Will has serious doubts. Could she ever live the kind of life he has lived?
All the same, Maddie progresses, developing her wits, skills, and courage.
And good thing, too—she will need them all when Will’s own troubles catch up with him.
about the author
John Flanagan started out in advertising. Before he wrote books, he wrote television jingles, brochures, and corporate videos. He also wrote for a popular Australian television show, called Hey Dad!, a sitcom that ran from 1986 to 1994. If you watched all the television shows written by John, you would have to watch 170 hours of TV!
John started writing fiction for his son, who didn’t like to read. John wanted to write a story his son, then in his early twenties, would enjoy. His son is still a fan.
