about the book

Sisters Gigi and Didi don’t talk about the one million dollars Didi won in a cooking show contest. Since mama died, it’s just the two of them, so what’s to talk about? They just go about life the same way, with Gigi going to school and Didi styling hair in the salon. The main difference is that they now live in a one-bedroom New York apartment, not a South Carolina trailer.

The whole reason for the relocation was to enroll brainy Gigi at the best private school.

While trying to figure out who she wants to be in her new environment, Gigi literally trips her way into a new friendship with the coolest boy in school. Unfortunately, she also attracts the attention of mean girl Mace.

In an effort to feel connected to her late mama, the two sisters make recipes from mama’s cookbook—just like they always have.

When Gigi unearths some family secrets, her world is turned upside down.

teachingbooks-bookabout the author

Kat Yeh (Yay!) was always reading, writing, and doodling while growing up in Westtown, Pennsylvania. For the longest time she thought she’d be a poet, but at some point she decided to focus on children’s books.

Her first middle grade novel, The Truth About Twinkie Pie, was inspired by the vintage 70s bridal shower she threw for her sister. Kat made a lot of Jello molds and food on a stick. After the party, the sisters decided someone needed to write about this type of food. Fifteen or so years later, Kat published Twinkie Pie.

Kat used to work in advertising and sports marketing.

She lives with her family in Long Island, New York.
