about the book
While at an abandoned quarry in Indiana, fourteen-year-old Jace Wilson witnesses a brutal murder. He barely escapes with his life.
Under a false identity, Jace is hidden in a wilderness skills program run by Ethan Serbin, a former Air Force instructor. Ethan knows one of his seven new students needs witness protection, but he’s not sure which one it is.
Meanwhile, the Blackwell Brothers are searching for the boy who escaped. They’re slaughtering anyone who gets in their way. And now there are only three people standing between them and the boy: Ethan and his wife, Allison; and Hannah Faber, a young fire watcher.
Will the endless miles of desolate Montana wilderness help or hinder those who wish Jace dead?
about the author
Michael Koryta (Ko-ree-ta) used to be a private investigator and a newspaper reporter before becoming a full-time writer. His PI work began while in high school, when he interned for a private investigator. Eventually, he turned it into his day job while in the early stages of his writing career.
He is not athletic. Whether Michael had a basketball, football, baseball, or golf club in his hands, coaches all agreed: “I think you should be a writer.”
Thankfully, Michael agreed with his coaches. At age eight, he was writing to his favorite authors. By age sixteen, he decided he wanted to become a crime novelist. And by age twenty-one, his novel Tonight I Said Goodbye won a contest and was published.
Michael loves doing field research. For his book Those Who Wish Me Dead, he went to survival school so that the wilderness-survival program his character is a part of was as realistic as possible. This love of getting the facts right goes back to his days as a PI and journalist.
In all of his book-jacket photos, Michael looks serious. This is because he cannot take a good picture. “If I smile for a photograph, I look evil. Possessed. Since I don’t want to reveal this truth, I try to look brooding, haunted by remarkable stories and gorgeous prose.”
When Michael isn’t writing, he enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, camping, boating, and fishing.
Born in Bloomington, Indiana, he still calls the area home. He lives with his wife, Christine; a cranky cat named Marlowe; an emotionally disturbed cat named John Pryor; and an athletic dog named Lola.
