about the book
Mo and her best friend Dale live in Tupelo Landing, North Carolina. It is the start of summer and these two eleven-year-olds have no plans bigger than watching Dale’s brother race stock cars and helping out at Mo’s family diner.
Their summer plans quickly grow complicated after a member of their small-town community is found dead. When Dale is considered a suspect and Mo’s adopted father disappears, the kids become increasingly entangled in the murder investigation. Where has Mo’s father gone? And who really committed the murder? Can they find the killer before anything else happens?
about the author
Sheila Turnage was born in Jacksonville, NC, and grew up on a farm. She went to East Carolina University to study journalism, but that’s not when she decided to be a writer.
Sheila knew she wanted to be a writer way back when she was in first grade. She had written a story with a big, fat pencil, and her teacher liked it enough to let her read it to a class of third graders, who were like giants to her first-grade eyes at the time. That was when the writing bug bit her!
As soon as she was able to read, Sheila’s mother got her a library card, so she could have books in her house all the time. Sheila read and read and read, and says that because she lived on a farm she had lots of time to read. So it wasn’t a handicap at all, unlike some people might think, to live on a farm and try to be a writer!
Today Sheila still lives on a farm, but now with her husband, a smart dog named Jake, a dozen chickens, and a flock of guineas. Sometimes they have wild turkeys and deer visit them in their yard. And by the way, Sheila is “thrilled to her toes” to win a Newbery Honor for Three Time Lucky.
