about the book

Ken Kaneki, a shy kid existing on the edge of society, sticks mostly to reading and getting his college assignments done. When the beautiful and sweet Rize asks him on a date, he can’t believe his luck. Turns out she’s not as interested in dating him as she is in eating him. She is a ghoul and lures him into a dark alley. There she is killed while attacking him.

When Ken wakes in the hospital, he is told that they transplanted Rize’s organs into him in order to save his life. That means he is half human and half ghoul! The first monstrous hybrid! Though he is no longer able to eat normal food, the idea of eating another human is abhorrent to him. Is it even worth going on living? How is he going to survive?

Turns out ghoul society is a real dog-eat-dog existence. Rivals maneuver for prime feeding grounds, and tricking humans is a sport. And don’t even get started on the special ghoul abilities! Learning to control them may be something that Ken will never achieve. Fatalistic nihilism is now a certain part of his new life. Straddling both worlds, Ken is hunted by the humans and repulsed by his “new normal.”

He has to come to terms with his new life and figure out how he is going to survive. One thing is certain. He is getting very, very hungry!

Be warned, dear reader, this book is not for the faint of heart. There will be bloody feedings!

about the author/illustrator

If you go looking for a photo of Sui Ishida, you won’t find any. Maybe it is because he is shy. Maybe it is because Sui Ishida is a pen name and he wants to keep his real identity a secret. Here is what has been published about him. He was born on December 28 in Fukuoka, Japan. That’s it. That is all that we can say with any certainty.

But rumors are flying about him. We know that he is a cultured and educated. His Tokyo Ghoul manga series and graphic novel is complex and full of literature, symbolism, and Asian history references.

Though a brother and sister are mentioned in a blog, his parents never are acknowledged. His comics have tragic stories, and his blogs have a tendency to be dark, too. Rumor has it that he was a tattoo artist before becoming a mangaka. His drawings of some of his characters feature totally awesome tattoos.

Some think Sui Ishida is really Yoshihiro Togashi. His series, Hunter x Hunter, reflects similar themes and violence. Also when Yoshihiro’s series goes on hiatus, Sui Ishida’s series reemerges! This happens year after year.

One thing is clear: Sui Ishida has a mega-best seller and award-winning debut manga series and graphic novel. His one-shot sequels, Tokyo Ghoul: Rize and Tokyo Ghoul: Jack, are equally acclaimed. Who is this man? Aren’t you dying to know!!!

Tokyo Ghoul : 2 by Sui Ishida
Ghouls look and live like ordinary humans, except for their insatiable craving for human flesh. Not all Ghouls are the same, though, and when Ken Kaneki becomes the first-ever human-Ghoul hybrid, he finds himself in the company of friendly Ghouls, who show him how to eat flesh humanely. The problem is, the authorities who hunt Ghouls do not recognize a difference between the good Ghouls and the ones who just like eating.
