about the book

Connor, Lev, and Risa have successfully pulled off a revolt at Happy Jack Harvest Camp and brought the abominable practice of teenage “unwinding” to light. Using the body parts of troublesome teenagers as replacements for wealthy adults is just wrong, and now society has woken up to questions of morality.

But that doesn’t mean the three are safe.

Connor has become the leader of the Graveyard, a refuge hidden in Arizona where teens labeled “troubled” can hide out until they reach eighteen, the age where it becomes illegal for adults to unwind them. Leadership is a huge responsibility that Connor isn’t sure he is ready for.

Risa faces the challenge of being wheelchair-bound, and the worry that she and Connor are growing apart.

And Lev, under house arrest far away from his friends, tries to make his life mean something by ministering to youths in jail, youths that are awaiting unwinding.

The three are about to get a shock worse than all their current problems, though. And that is Cam, the first teen made entirely out of unwound parts. He is a modern-day Frankenstein monster, being groomed to become the future of humanity—which sheds light on the horror of what the corporations in charge of unwinding have planned.

about the author

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Neal Shusterman dreamed of being a writer, actor, doctor, rock star, artist, architect, and film director. In ninth grade, one of his teachers challenged him to write a story each month, and he realized that writing was his passion over all others.

Neal studied psychology and drama at the University of California. During the summers he worked as camp counselor where he gained a reputation as a great storyteller.

Some of his early books began as stories over the campfires.

Neal also wrote a humorous column in college which was picked up for syndication. He took a job at a talent agency, which led to his first book deal and movie script.

Neal has since written more than thirty books, in addition to musical and stage plays, and screenplays for motion pictures and television. He always carries a notebook, laptop, and micro-cassette recorder, so he can write during every spare moment. He usually writes in longhand and rewrites to computer. Some of Neal’s works are under the pen name of Easton Royce.

Neal lives in southern California with his four children—who have forgiven him for his poor organizational and laundry skills, but appreciate him for his fantastic homemade guacamole!
