about the book
The Sinclair family owns a private island off of Cape Cod. Every summer, the whole extended family gathers there for lazy days full of sticky lemonades and Scrabble games.
Cadence, her cousins Johnny and Mirren, and friend Gat, have been best friends since they were eight. Nothing is about to change that.
But one summer, something happens to Cadence. Suffering from amnesia and migraines, she tries to figure out what happened. She doesn’t care if it takes her years to piece it together.
All the family drama sure doesn’t help.
Why can’t she remember anything? What happened that one summer?
about the author
E. Lockhart was born in New York City, but grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Seattle, Washington. Her full first name is Emily.
She discovered her love for writing by watching rehearsals of her father’s plays. The story would change with each revision and cut. She even wrote two novels in third grade, but then got distracted by theater.
In high school, she went to summer drama school at Northwestern and the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. She later went to Vassar College and has a PhD in English literature from Columbia University.
Her book The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks was a Printz Award honor book, a finalist for the National Book Award, and a recipient of the Cybil Award.
We Were Liars is a New York Times bestseller. And it better be! She re-wrote it fifteen times to get it right!
Emily is currently a vegetarian but has been vegan, and her favorite food is guacamole. She is a good cook, enjoys yoga, making home movies, keeping up with photo albums, and reading.
She teaches creative writing at Hamline University’s MFA program and currently lives in the New York City area. Emily also writes for children under her real name Emily Jenkins (Lockhart was her grandmother’s maiden name).

The last thing Charlie remembers is being a normal high school kid—doing homework and karate, getting a girl’s number, and hoping to become an air force pilot. But suddenly he wakes up in someone else’s nightmare, strapped to a chair, bloodied, and bruised.
