about the book

Everyone has a number, a deathdate.

Maddie sees the dates hovering right above everyone’s foreheads. She’s seen them for as long as she can remember, but she didn’t know what they meant until the day her dad died in the line of duty on the date stamped in his hairline.

If people ask for their date, they often want to know the how, where, and when—but that’s not the way it works. Maddie only sees the number. And the number never changes.

With her alcoholic mother struggling to keep a job, Maddie is forced to charge clients who want to know deathdates.

Mrs. Tibbolt only wanted the date of her young daughter who’s struggling with leukemia. After giving the reading, Maddie notices the date of the woman’s son—only a week away. Claiming Maddie’s a fraud, Mrs. Tibbolt storms out.

The boy goes missing on that exact date. And the FBI suspect Maddie and her friend Stubby….

Victoria Laurie’s father was in international auto sales, so she lived in six states and two foreign countries before her family settled back in Michigan, which is where she was born.

When she got sick of the cold, Victoria moved to Florida. While there, she came into her psychic abilities. All her life “stuff just popped out of [her] mouth at inopportune times. No one ever put a title to it, least of all [her].” After some bizarre incidents, Victoria couldn’t ignore it anymore.

Working as a psychic intuitive, she never thought she could write, let alone publish a novel. Then she got the idea for her first series and basically said “Why not?” She never thought she’d continue writing after that series was complete.

Victoria’s first young adult novel, When, has been optioned for TV.

She lives and writes in Michigan with her two dachshunds, Toby and Lilly, and her parrot, Doc.
