about the book

It is 1192, and the Third Crusade is underway. Will Shackley, son of Lord Shackley, enjoys a charmed, protected life. Since his father is away fighting along with King Richard the Lionheart, Will. is somewhat in charge of Shackley House (under the regent, of course). In short, everything is good for Will—which of course means things are about to go very, very bad.

Word comes that King Richard has been kidnapped. His brother, Prince John, making a play for the throne, decides to test the waters to see if his lords are loyal—like Will in Shackley House. He sends Sir Guy of Gisborne to test the regent’s political leanings. In the process, Will is tricked into injuring Sir Guy’s servant—a pretext for holding Will hostage to force his father to side with Prince John.

Will escapes into the supposedly haunted Sherwood Forest and is captured by a gang of bandits. Convincing them he could help them, Will becomes Will Scarlet, and leads the gang’s leader, Rob—a drunkard reeling from a lost love—back to Shackley House to take back his father’s estate.

about the author

While growing up as the baby in an average middle-class family in St. Louis, Missouri, Matthew Cody remembers enduring the average kid tortures of his three older average siblings. In school, he had average grades. Let’s just say that he was an average kid…but he had an EXTRAORDINARY love of telling stories…to anyone who would listen!

Matthew continued storytelling in college by studying theater and creative writing. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he went on to study the greatest storyteller, Shakespeare, and earned a master’s degree. He moved to New York City and worked in theater while writing short stories and comic books. When he began teaching college English, he also started writing, and Powerless is his first novel. He is so excited that this first published story is also optioned to be a movie!

Matthew still lives in New York City with his wife Alisha and their young son, Willem. Every Wednesday, you’ll find him at his favorite comic book shop. That is when the new stories come out!
