about the book
I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.
Adelina survived the blood fever, when most died. The disease caused her black hair to turn silver and her left eye to become a scar. It’s rumored some survivors even received powerful gifts of magic.
All she’s ever wanted is to feel accepted and loved, but her father ignores her. When escaping an unwanted proposal, Adelina winds up a member of the Dagger Society, a group of survivors determined to use their gifts to escape Inquisition’s genocide of gifted survivors.
Adelina wants to trust the Dagger’s leader Enzo, and believe that Teren—the Inquisition’s leader—is the true enemy, but trust and belief are not things that come easily.
It doesn’t help that Adelina’s abilities are unlike anything Enzo and Teren have ever seen. How can she trust anyone if she doesn’t even trust herself?
It’s my turn to use. My turn to hurt.
about the author
Marie Lu was born in Shanghai but she grew up in Texas; then she moved to California when she went to the University of Southern California. After graduation, Marie stayed in the state for its wonderful weather.
Marie was born in 1984, which she sees as almost a prophecy considering her love for dystopian books. Her Young Elites trilogy is set in an alternate 1300s Renaissance Italy. If Marie was a blood fever survivor with a magical ability like her character Adeline, she hopes it would be the ability to stop time. She’s a bit of a dork, and that would allow her to get more work done! Adeline is very different from the characters of Day and June in Marie’s first book, Legend, who are inherently good people at heart. Adelina, on the other hand, is not.
Her first job after college was doing art and design for online social media games. In fact, video games are one of Marie’s great loves. The other things she loves include fighter jets, happy people, dogs, rain, Christmas lights, and—needless to say—books.
Marie lives in Pasadena, California, with her boyfriend and their Pembroke Welsh Corgis and a Chihuahua mix.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but words kill. The Poets recruited Emily off the streets of San Francisco to attend a secret academy where students are taught the magic of coercion and control through words. When she’s kicked out of the academy for rule breaking, she swears that before long they will regret that decision. Meanwhile, Wil lost his memory when he survived the bareword—the word that kills—and two Poets are hunting for him. They want the word back…
Unbreakable (Legion, Book 1) by Kami Garcia
