about the book
In a marketing and idol-obsessed distant future, Earth is no longer the great planet that it once was. It isn’t prospering like colonies on other planets. But seventeen-year-old Carr “the Raptor” Luka has something more important on his mind: zeroboxing, a gravity-free combat sport. As a rising star, Carr’s dreams are set on winning the championship title. He trains and competes on Valtego, a city-station orbiting the Moon.
In Carr’s favor, the Zero Gravity Fighting Association provide him with a brandhelm to work up a personal marketing strategy. Risha, the beautiful and talented brandhelm, is a genetically engineered Martian colonist. These colonists raise suspicion on Earth, but Risha quickly transforms Carr into a celebrity; and Carr finds himself falling for her along the way.
Residents of Earth roar for Carr as he becomes their hero and source of inspiration. But Carr soon learns about an expansive criminal scheme and must keep a devastating secret.
As Carr is left with monumental decisions, his choices will put everything important to him in danger. The entire solar system could erupt in violence…And this time, not for sport.
about the author
Science fiction and fantasy writer Fonda Lee has been infatuated with science fiction since childhood. She wrote her first novel, involving a dragon and a magic pendant, in fifth grade while riding the bus to and from school. It was three hundred pages! In high school, she used her friends as characters in a super-hero novel co-written with a friend…using a graphic calculator. Neither of her early pieces survived.
Fonda’s first published novel, Zeroboxer, is inspired by many pieces of her own life. Like her main character, she is also a fighter—an experienced martial artist with a second degree black belt in karate and a black belt in kung fu; and she loves actions movies like The Matrix, Inception, and Minority Report. Additionally, she knows all about marketing as a trained corporate strategist who has worked for Fortune 500 firms.
Fonda gained a degree in finance and worked as a corporate strategist because that’s what is practical and lucrative. After doing that for more than ten years, she knew that she had to make time for doing what she really wanted to do—write novels. She started working fewer hours and instead spent her time writing with the goal of being published. She succeeded within two years.
Fonda grew up in Calgary, Canada, and now resides in Portland, Organ with her family.
